The upcoming exhibition Interstice brings together three artists who explore the concept of in-betweenness and liminal spaces in their art. Edwige Charlot, Ben Potter, and Elizabeth Gourlay each offer unique perspectives on the theme, while also sharing a common interest in exploring the space between different ideas and concepts.
Edwige Charlot's work often deals with the intersection of different cultures and identities, creating a sense of interstitial space that invites exploration and reflection. Her mixed-media collages combine elements of African, Caribbean, and European art and culture, creating a unique fusion that blurs the boundaries between different traditions. The interstices between these different elements become the focus of her work, revealing the complex and fluid nature of identity and culture.
Ben Potter's paintings similarly explore the interstices between different materials and forms. He often works with found photographs and stencils, transforming them into unexpected shapes and configurations of positive and negative space. Potter's paintings exist in a liminal space between the everyday and the extraordinary, abstraction and representation, inviting us to to see them in a new light.
Finally, Elizabeth Gourlay's abstract paintings explore the interstices between color, form, and space. Her paintings are marked by a deliberate and intentional use of color, often arranged in a seemingly mathematical or geometric pattern. Her color choices are not haphazard, but rather carefully calculated to create a sense of balance, harmony, and tension within the composition. This interstitial space between movement and stillness, between color and form, invites us to reflect on the nature of perception and experience.
Taken together, the artworks of Charlot, Potter, and Gourlay offer a rich exploration of the idea of interstice. Whether through the fusion of different cultures and identities, the space between different materials, or the interplay of color and form in abstract painting, these artists reveal the complex and dynamic nature of the space in between. Through their work, we are invited to explore and interpret this liminal space, consider the connections and relationships between different ideas and concepts, and embrace the ambiguity and complexity of the spaces in between.
