Kenny Cole in the Project Space:
The Shroud Cycle; Why Are We Here?
The gallery is pleased to present Kenny Cole’s final presentation of the ‘Shroud Cycle,’ which explores the existential themes of human existence, war, and destruction. The series began with folded, ink-stained paper, from which Cole created vibrant, dynamic images of head-on views of missiles and familiar animals, such as dolphins and eagles, that serve as symbolic counterpoints for these pressing issues. A focal point of the Project Space is a 10-foot-tall working Jacob’s Ladder, a monumental sculptural piece that allows viewers to actively change the imagery by pulling a rope, triggering a clattering of parts and flipping the image back and forth. A central motif in the show is the head-on view of missiles, which flatten into circles, evoking cruciform imagery and symbolizing the impact of war. These works, especially the "Symmetrical Warfare" series, prompt viewers to confront the human toll of global conflicts, from the Middle East to other regions. As Cole writes, “My careening missiles, with their ‘head-on’ perspective aimed directly at the viewer, ask us to place ourselves in others’ shoes. I view this work as an activist aesthetic, with its underlying association to the Christian motif of martyrdom.”
On view through October 12

Chance and Intention by Anne Hebebrand
Hebebrand writes, ‘the paintings explore the dance between chance and intention involved in the creative process.” For Hebebrand, the challenge is always to make paintings that feel both alive and cohesive. The freedom to chose colors, create textures, and make and marks is followed by a more intentional approach to developing the composition.
Anne Hebebrand is an abstract painter known for her vibrant use of color and texture, working primarily with oil and cold wax medium. She holds a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University in Boston, MA, and an MA from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Her work has been featured in publications like The New York Times and Art New England, and she has exhibited in galleries across the United States and Mexico. Hebebrand currently resides in Bath, Maine, and spends her winters in Todos Santos, Mexico. Please join us for her exhibition, on view through September 14!

TRUST by Avy Claire in the Project Space
"“How can we look cleanly, without wanting to find in things what we have been told is there but rather what is simply there? This is the innocent game I propose we play.” - Antoni Tapies, from The Game of Knowing How to Look.
Avy Claire's exhibition revolves around the essence of TRUST, inviting viewers to partake in a playful and innocent exploration of art, free from preconceived notions. Her creative journey commenced by revisiting her flat files, spanning 25-30 years of ideas, seamlessly connecting past concepts with her current works on display. Embracing risks and maintaining an element of surprise, Avy Claire's artwork reflects adventure, organization, and decision-making, resulting in a fresh and captivating artistic experience. Each painting evolves from its predecessor, crafting a continuous story that unveils the very reality of her artistic expression. Amidst the colors and strokes, Avy Claire faces the challenge of trusting her instincts and the creative process itself, an endeavor that lies at the heart of her compelling exhibition.

Through her captivating still life paintings, Maloney explores the beauty of ordinary objects, revealing the compelling stories they hold. Enamored by the art of trompe l’oeil, Maloney skillfully embraces the idea that painting can uncover profound truths while blurring the boundaries between realism and abstraction. The Cynthia Winings Gallery presents,
Interstice

Opening Reception
Sunday, May 28, 5 - 7PM
Ben Potter, Stubble, 2023, Silver, ink and pollen on panel, 19.5 x 26 inches
The upcoming exhibition Interstice brings together three artists who explore the concept of in-betweenness and liminal spaces in their art. Edwige Charlot, Ben Potter, and Elizabeth Gourlay each offer unique perspectives on the theme, while also sharing a common interest in exploring the space between different ideas and concepts.
Edwige Charlot's work often deals with the intersection of different cultures and identities, creating a sense of interstitial space that invites exploration and reflection. Her mixed-media collages combine elements of African, Caribbean, and European art and culture, creating a unique fusion that blurs the boundaries between different traditions. The interstices between these different elements become the focus of her work, revealing the complex and fluid nature of identity and culture.
Ben Potter's paintings similarly explore the interstices between different materials and forms. He often works with found photographs and stencils, transforming them into unexpected shapes and configurations of positive and negative space. Potter's paintings exist in a liminal space between the everyday and the extraordinary, abstraction and representation, inviting us to to see them in a new light.
Finally, Elizabeth Gourlay's abstract paintings explore the interstices between color, form, and space. Her paintings are marked by a deliberate and intentional use of color, often arranged in a seemingly mathematical or geometric pattern. Her color choices are not haphazard, but rather carefully calculated to create a sense of balance, harmony, and tension within the composition. This interstitial space between movement and stillness, between color and form, invites us to reflect on the nature of perception and experience.
Taken together, the artworks of Charlot, Potter, and Gourlay offer a rich exploration of the idea of interstice. Whether through the fusion of different cultures and identities, the space between different materials, or the interplay of color and form in abstract painting, these artists reveal the complex and dynamic nature of the space in between. Through their work, we are invited to explore and interpret this liminal space, consider the connections and relationships between different ideas and concepts, and embrace the ambiguity and complexity of the spaces in between.

'The Weight Of Water' by Heather Lyon
The Weight of Water
Heather Lyon's work is a visual and movement-based inquiry into the miraculous. "The Weight of Water '' is a durational performance, an interaction between her body and 75 pounds of dark blue sand. The weight of the sand corresponds to the weight of the water content of Lyon's body and is a manifestation of the unknowable, the void. Lyon invites us to become empathetic witnesses to her contemplative movement of and with the sand. The slippage of sand vibrates and expands into the void and from that emerges pattern and form. This work is in resonance with her recent paintings of whirlpools, a response to the pull of the sublime.

Artist Talk: A Sketchbook Is A Place
The Cynthia Winings Gallery presents:
A Virtual Artist Talk by Lari Washburn: A Sketchbook Is A Place
Thursday, April 29, 7PM
A Sketchbook Is A Place
Washburn writes, “My sketchbooks are the way I stay connected to that fresh, open, passionate place of listening that I aspire to as an artist. My talk will share a few of my insights about that journey, and show you examples of my sketchbooks and how they inform my paintings and drawings, and the materials I use in my sketchbook practice.”
Lari Washburn received a BFA in painting from Lake Erie College, but she “put it on a shelf for many years because I had not learned in art school anything about where art came from within myself.” While working in a telecommunications corporation, Washburn founded a creativity center for software developers and engineers to help them “think outside the box”. She loved that work, but found that she was the person who needed to see things differently. She writes, “One offering we had for our clients was an intuitive painting workshop to teach them about creative risk-taking. I started to pursue these workshops more deeply for myself, and that connected to me to what is my current art-making practice today.”
The gallery is pleased to present a Virtual artist talk with Lari Washburn, in conversation with Cynthia Winings, which will highlight Washburn’s intuitive approach to art-making and materials in the context of her sketchbook practice. Thursday, April 29 at 7PM. Please RSVP to receive the Zoom Link.
